The Guide, by Iain Wells

The viewing areas at Knockhill are superb, with virtually every viewpoint with the exception of the hairpin, giving views of more than one corner on the track. Despite this, the Real Radio Hairpin (formerly Taylor's) remains the number one overtaking spot on the circuit and a lot of the crowd tend to gather down here, especially when it's wet and the covered standing area becomes a welcome relief from the elements. It's also a good photo opportunity, because the cars are at their slowest point on the lap and you can stand right up to the crash barrier. If it's raining and this area is rather crowded, then you can always head round to Clark's corner, where there are two covered areas, one of them with a good loudspeaker system installed. This is also a popular vantage point for fans, with views of the cars coming down from Butchers (formerly McIntyres), then appearing over the hill at the John R. Weir chicane and heading towards Clark's, which can be an overtaking point as well, due to the corner being widened slightly a couple of years ago for this very purpose.

The area from Duffus Dip (aka SEAT Curves) down to Biutcher's provides you with a view of 3/4 of the circuit, only the hairpin being missed out. If you go closer to Duffus from the main straight, you will find a large catch fence in front of you, but providing you stand back on the bank, you shouldn't have much trouble seeing over it. Knockhill offers viewing from inside the track as well, with a large man-made hill on the inside of the hairpin being a favourite spot for fans. It must be a decent spot to watch from, as the commentary tower is situated just next to it! One of the downsides of this part though, is the fact that the only way to access it, is from the bridge across the main straight, which can become congested, especially around paddock walkabout time and the ground is prone to getting very muddy when the dreaded rain comes. Although in the past the circuit officials have opened up the gates to let people cross the track when there is nothing happening, rather like Lodge Corner at Oulton Park. If you are there on qualifying day, take a wander round to the outside of the John R. Weir Chicane, where you will see exactly what a committed touring car driver looks like. The drivers can't see the corner from the approach, so they simply point the car at the sky and ride the inside kerbs spectacularly, plus if you look in the background you can see the cars two-wheeling it through Duffus Dip as well.

As for facilities, well there are plenty of catering vans dotted around the top section of the track from the hairpin to Duffus Dip as well as Kinnairds and the Clubhouse, where you can sample such fine Scottish cuisine as Scotch Pies and Stovies, along with your usual burgers and chips. One of the other pluspoints of the Knockhill food and drink outlets is the price of a pint, which is cheaper than most of the other racetracks in the UK!

The same advice applies as always for Knockhill - bring suncream and an umbrella!
