Barwell Motorsport are the latest Production class team to express their intention to capitalize on the rule changes that will allow ETCC-spec cars to run in the BTCC from next year. Hot on the heels of Edenbridge Racing, who unveiled their ETCC BMW contender at Brands Hatch, Barwell showed off a mock-up of the Honda Civic that they intend to run in 2004 in the paddock at Donington Park last weekend.
Pictured left, the Civic is based on the team’s Group N car, with modifications made in order to bring the bodywork in line with what is likely to feature on next year’s car.
Having been crowned Production Teams champion, and with Luke Hines taking the honours in the Drivers category, the team have enjoyed a succesful year after opting to return to the Production class.
2004 will not be completely new territory for the team, as they competed in the Touring class last year with a pair of Independent Astra Coupes driven by Tom Chilton and Aaron Slight.
Barwell Motorsport team-boss Mark Lemmer said, “I’m over the moon with what Luke [Hines] and Alan [Blencowe] have done this year. The cars have been fantastic and it’s a great springboard for next year. It would be great to keep the same cars, the same team and step up to ETCC-spec together. Hopefully we can win the Independents Cup that we just lost out on last year!”
