BTCCPages.com: Race 2 report

There was yet more rain for the third and final BTCC race at Donington Park. The reverse grid system put Colin Turkington on pole position for Team RAC, with Motorbase Performance’s Matt Allison lining up alongside him.

Turkington led through the first corner, but Allison found himself losing out to Mike Jordan and Darren Turner. At the end of the opening lap Turkington led from Jordan, Turner, Allison and Mat Jackson.

Mike Jordan took the lead in the BTCC-spec Honda Integra as the leaders went into the Craner Curves for the second time, after going three abreast with Turkington and Turner. The driver making quickest progress through the pack was Jason Plato. After starting ninth, the championship leader climbed to third position by the end of lap four.

At the front, Mike Jordan had his mirrors full of yellow SEAT Leons. He was trailed for several laps by Darren Turner, before Plato moved through to second and took up the challenge. It was the mid-distance lap when Plato made a successful bid to take the race lead away from Jordan, going up the hill towards Mcleans. On the same lap, there was contact between Turner and Matt Neal as the Team Halfords driver pushed his way through to third position.

Leading the race, Jason Plato would have been delighted to see championship rival Fabrizio Giovanardi fall from sixth to 13th position after an excursion off on to the grass on lap nine. It was possibly this news that distracted Plato and allowed Mike Jordan to retake the lead, albeit for less than half a lap. Jordan also lost out to Neal in the same move, dropping to third.

Behind the top three, there was a fierce battle developing between fourth and ninth positions. Mat Jackson led the six-car pack, which was made up of Turner, Shedden, Turkington, Onslow-Cole and Chilton. Turner dropped to the back of this pack, while Chilton made a last-lap move on Onslow-Cole to gain a position.

At the chequered flag, it was a second win of the day for Jason Plato, ahead of Matt Neal, Mike Jordan and Mat Jackson. Gordon Shedden finished fifth, while Colin Turkington was sixth and Tom Chilton, seventh. Tom Onslow-Cole crossed the line in eight, with Darren Turner ninth. Matt Allison scooped the final point-scoring position for Motorbase Performance.

After fearing a troublesome weekend at Donington Park, Jason Plato leaves the Leicestershire circuit with a massive 25-point lead over Fabrizio Giovanardi in the Drivers' championship. In the Manufacturers' Championship, SEAT has closed the gap on Vauxhall by 15 points.
